Invitation for Vignerons
Dear Winegrower,
We are writing to let you know that the second edition of Vignerons d’Europe will be held in Tuscany from December 5 to 7, 2009.
Slow Food feels that this important event will be of interest to you. It is inviting you and a thousand other winegrowers from around Europe to meet and discuss the future of wine in Europe.
Why are we organizing this event?
In the current situation where the European wine industry faces economic difficulties and a crisis of identity, there is a proliferation of meetings, market research, parliamentary commissions and reform projects at European level, but the voice of producers is absent.
This meeting in Tuscany intends to focus on winegrowers, your experiences and opinions. For this reason there will not be many planned speeches during the in-depth seminars but discussions will be open to your contributions. The democratic discussions will be open to all, reflecting the successful approach taken at Terra Madre. During the three days there will be an opportunity to work on a Document supported by the majority of winegrowers present, which will be presented in the final session of proceedings. It will be a very practical demonstration of winegrowers’ desire to send a clear and strong signal to European politicians and consumers.
Sustainability as a central issue of Vignerons d’Europe 2009
With worldwide attention focused on climate problems and pollution, in the last two years the wine sector has been immersed in an often confusing debate about how to reduce its environmental impact. One of the key concepts, which risks just degenerating into a marketing tool, is sustainability. We would like producers to have the chance to address this issue at Vignerons d’Europe, to prevent it from becoming a fashionable statement rather than the future direction for our European agriculture. Another objective will be to give winegrowers a venue for exchanging points of view and practical experiences on how to renew quality European winegrowing and winemaking, confirming the contents of the final document of Vignerons d’Europe 2007 in Montpellier.
The event has been organized with the support of the Tuscany Regional Authority. All participants will be provided free board and lodging, but to cover the high costs of simultaneous translation into four languages and secretarial services, we would request you to make a minimum contribution of € 50 when registering.
To confirm your attendance or obtain further information, please email vigneron@slowfood.it or contact Jonathan Gebser on (+39) 0172 419660 or (+39) 329 603 1498.
We very much look forward to seeing you in Tuscany and send our kindest regards.
